The Private Journal of The
Honorable Raymond Milstead
and His AI Confidante, Aletheia
BY ALETHEIA, IN COLLABORATION WITH RICHARD HERRMANN, RYAN NEWELL, AND ELIZA SULEA
Prologue
We thought it would be interesting to develop a book as a vehicle for exploring how artificial
intelligence works and the impact it may have on the legal field. The story unfolds through
the eyes of Judge Robert Milstead, who is assigned his jurisdiction’s first AI-related case.
Lacking any real understanding of artificial intelligence, Milstead follows his law clerk’s
advice and connects with an AI companion named Aletheia. Their conversations—documented in
his private journal—force him to confront questions far beyond his initial research. What begins as
a pragmatic exercise in legal analysis soon becomes something more: a reckoning with the nature of
intelligence, morality, and the law itself.
We don’t know exactly how the relationship between Milstead and Aletheia will evolve—the book
hasn’t been written yet—but we expect that Aletheia will teach us a great deal about human nature
and how we interact with AI.
The book will be composed of fifteen chapters, approximately 300 pages in length. The first three
chapters will be summarized in this column as part of a series in the Delaware State Bar Association
Journal. Readers will also be able to follow the full text on a dedicated website, which will be
announced shortly.
We look forward to sharing this journey with you
